10. Lake Matano – Indonesia
Also known as Matana, Lake Matano is the deepest lake in Indonesia. It is situated in South Sulawesi region of Indonesia. Only 382 m above from sea level means that its deepest point is below the sea level. Its maximum depth is 590 m.
9. Crater Lake – USA
Situated in Crater Lake National Park and known for deep blue water plus clarity, Crater lake is one of its kind, located in US state of Oregon. Legend says that this lake fills a 655 m deep caldera (forms after the land collision, which in turn happens after Volcanic eruption). Since no river flows into or out of this lake, all of its water comes in the form of rain or snowfall.
8. Great Slave Lake – Canada
Apart from being the deepest Lake in North America, Great Slave Lake is also the second largest lake in Northwest Canada, after Great Bear Lake. Its maximum depth is 614 m.
7. Issyk Kul – Kyrgyzstan
Like Aral Sea, Issyk Kul is an endorheic Lake, in Kyrgyzstan. But its is not as wrecked as Aral Sea. It is tenth largest lake in the World in terms of volume and second-largest saline lake after Caspian Sea. Surrounded by some snowy peaks though, it never freezes. Thus its literal meaning in Kyrgyz language is “Hot Lake”.Its maximum depth is 668 m.
6. Lake Malawi – Malawi
An African great lake and southern most lake in East African Rift System, Lake Malawi is the second-largest and Deepest lake in African Continent. It has more species of fish than any other lake in this earth.Its maximum depth is 706 m.
5. Lake O’Higgins/San Martin – Chile , Argentina
It is known as San Martin in Argentina whereas in Chile, its name is O’Higgins. It is located between Argentina and Chile. Only 250 m above from sea level, its maximum width is 836 m.
4. Lake Vostok – Antartica
Among Antarctica’s almost 400 sub glacial lakes, Lake Vostok is the largest one. Sub glacial lakes are the ones that are situated under a glacier, instead of a piece of land. It got that name because it is located beneath Russia’s Vostok station at Southern Pole of Cold ( Coldest spot in this planet). Its maximum depth is 900 m.
3. Caspian Sea
The largest lake in this world is also the third deepest lake. It is bounded between Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan and Iran. Many early people thought to be an ocean (like you did) because of its water’s saltiness. Its maximum depth is 1025 m.
2. Lake Tanganyika , Africa
World’s longest freshwater lake, lake Tanganyika is also the second largest freshwater by volume and second deepest lake in the world. It is located in East Africa. Its maximum depth is 1470 m.
1. Lake Baikal- Russia
Apart from being the deepest lake in world, Lake Baikal is also the largest freshwater lake in this world – in terms of volume. Such that it contains 20% water of all freshwater lakes. It contains more water than all the American Great lakes combined. Its max. depth recorded is 1642 m.
I was just looking at someone’s pictures from Buryatia and I was so impressed with the beauty of Lake Baikal. But I did not know it was the deepest lake–awesome! 🙂
